How
do I see "pagerank"?
Download
and install the google toolbar http://toolbar.google.com/ -
use the very left button on this to make sure the pagerank button
is displayed. Now the Google toolbar will show the pagerank of
anypage you browse to. You can find more info on how this works
at http://www.google.com/corporate/tech.html
What
is good “pagerank”?
There
is no reason why your homepage should be any less than 4. However
the scale is deceptive as a “pagerank” of 5 needs probably 10
times as many links into a site as “pagerank” 4. So you won't
see significant change in your “pagerank” once you reach 4. This
doesn't not mean that additional links are not having any effect!
How
do I see the number of links into my web site or my competitor's
web site?
There
are a couple of way – Google tends to show only a few of the
links into a web site – go to www.google.com and
type in link:www.yourdomain.com (substitute yourdomain.com for
your homepage or that of a competitor).
Google tends to be very slow in showing
new links though - a beter idea can be gained by doing the same
thing at http://search.msn.com
How
soon will I see benefits?
It
is a gradual process, and also hard to predict when it will have
an impact. Google tends to update it's listings at the start
of the month; it can also on occasion catapult you to the top
of the listings. We can also build links direct to a sub page
of your web site to target a specific key word or phrase if you
have a search engine phrase that is performing poorly.
Do
I really need to bother; I get plenty of visits at the moment?
If
you are in a real niche market you may not need to. However you
can be sure that many of your competitors will be involved in
link building, and if you want to be sure of maintaining your
listings, or improve them further this is something not to ignore.
